Many cases of gum disease are treatable via non-surgical means. For example, scaling and root planing is a very common method used to get rid of harmful bacteria and promote healing of the oral tissues. In some situations, though, more extensive care is necessary. Your periodontist might inform you that you need osseous surgery<\/a>. What exactly is this procedure, and what can you expect from it? This blog post explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What Happens During Osseous Surgery?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The goal of osseous surgery is to reduce the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. This minimizes the space where bacteria can hide and opens the door for your oral tissues to start healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the procedure, your periodontist will gently fold back your gum tissue to gain access to the underlying bone and tooth roots. At this stage, they will meticulously clean the roots and remove any tartar or plaque that has accumulated. If your bone has developed irregularities due to gum disease, your doctor will smooth these surfaces to promote healthy tissue attachment. The gum tissue will then be repositioned and stitched in place, which helps stabilize your teeth and restore your oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The procedure usually takes between one and two hours, depending on the severity of your gum disease and the number of teeth involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does Osseous Surgery Feel Like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During osseous surgery, you will not feel pain because the area will be thoroughly anesthetized. Many practices also use sedation to promote patient comfort. If you do feel anything, it should just be a sense of pressure or movement as your periodontist works. After the procedure, you could experience mild swelling, tenderness, and soreness around the treated site. These sensations are normal and usually subside within a few days. You might be prescribed pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications to help manage any discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens After Osseous Surgery?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following osseous surgery, you will need to follow detailed post-op instructions regarding oral hygiene, dietary choices, and activity restrictions. Most patients notice an improvement in gum health, reduced bleeding, and greater stability of their teeth as healing progresses. Swelling and mild discomfort usually resolve within a week, while full recovery may take several weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important that you attend any follow-up visits recommended by your periodontal care team. They can check on your mouth\u2019s healing process, coach you on how to care for your oral tissues, and help you with long-term management of your gum health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osseous surgery offers a path toward improved gum health! If your periodontist recommends it for you, you can be confident that it will yield positive results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
