Young girl at dentist receiving sedation dentistry.

Maybe you’ve seen laughing gas in action while you were watching television; a patient is visiting the dentist for some sort of treatment, they’re given a mask to wear, and usually within moments they’re laughing and giggling uncontrollably. How can a dentist provide treatment to a patient who’s cackling like a mad scientist? Even though it makes for interesting television, this situation is highly exaggerated and plays into some of the common misconceptions and myths about sedation dentistry. Keep reading as we debunk four fairly common sedation dentistry myths that you might’ve heard about.

Myth #1: Sedation Is Only Used for Complex Surgical Procedures

While it’s true that sedation dentistry is associated with major surgical procedures, it certainly isn’t limited to them! Sedation dentistry can be used for virtually any procedure, from routine visits to complex procedures like wisdom teeth removal! Patients who experience dental-related fear and anxiety often can also receive sedation. Ultimately, your dentist wants you to be comfortable and relaxed during your visit; if sedation can assist with this, it can be used!

Myth #2: There’s Only One Kind of Sedation

Even though laughing gas is the most common option for sedation, there are multiple methods that are utilized in dentistry, including:

  • Oral sedation.
  • Nitrous oxide (it’s called laughing gas, but it doesn’t make you laugh!).
  • IV sedation.
  • General anesthesia (typically reserved for complex oral surgeries).

Myth #3: Anyone Can Receive Sedation Dentistry

Unfortunately, sedation dentistry is not a viable option for everyone. Although many patients are found to be eligible candidate upon inspection, there are a few factors that can disqualify you:

  • You’re pregnant.
  • You’re allergic to the sedation medication being used.
  • You have other medical conditions that would interfere with the effectiveness of the sedation.

Myth #4: Sedation Is Unsafe

While there are cases where some patients aren’t good candidates for sedation dentistry, that doesn’t mean the methods aren’t safe for use. The vast majority of patients are good candidates for options like nitrous oxide; however, other types of sedation might not be appropriate for some patients depending on their medical history. Your dentist will always review your records and ensure you’re eligible for sedation before administering any treatment. That said, safety shouldn’t be a concern!

Even though there are many myths floating around about sedation dentistry, it’s an effective and viable option for most patients. Don’t let misinformation dissuade you from receiving the dental care you need and talk with your dentist if you’re curious about your eligibility.
